Powered Mobility Device Autonomy Residential Screen – improving powered mobility screening in residential aged care settings

What is PoMoDARS?

The Powered Mobility Device Autonomy Residential Screen (PoMoDARS) is a new tool aimed to support and promote the safe use of powered mobility devices (PMD) among older adults. The PoMoDARS was developed to address a gap identified in PMD assessment tools, specifically for the residential aged care setting. The PoMoDARS is designed to screen PMD capacity and performance skills with guidance from the ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, WHO, 2001) and PEOP (Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance model, Baum, 2015) models.

The PoMoDARS is a time efficient, equipment-free, screening tool to assist clinicians, such as registered nurses, to monitor PMD safety and to prompt referral to an occupational therapist where further assessment or training is indicated. Initial face and content validation for the PoMoDARS has been demonstrated and further reliability studies are planned. Use of the PoMoDARS is intended to re-focus discussion around the critical contribution of powered mobility for older adults living in residential care, to defend the importance of choice and control and create a balance of support and safety measures.
